Blockstream Jade Setup Guide

What comes with Blockstream Jade

Getting Started with Blockstream Jade

Button Functions

• Power button: Press and hold to turn on/off the device at the bottom right corner of the Jade, position number 1.
• Confirmation button: Press to confirm your selection on the screen.
• Navigation buttons: Press the left or right button to navigate the menu. Pressing both buttons simultaneously can act as the Select button (Jade Plus only).
• USB-C port: For connecting to accessories, such as charging the battery or plugging in other accessories.
• Screen: Displays transaction details or QR codes.
• Camera: Scans QR codes to access wallets or perform Air-Gapped transactions.

Jade Screen Statuses You Should Know

Inactive Status

• Uninitialized: The Jade device has not been set up yet. The user must complete the setup process.
• Initialized: The Jade device has been set up and requires a PIN to unlock.
• Wallet data is encrypted on the device and requires a PIN to unlock. Jade can be unlocked by connecting to a companion application via USB, Bluetooth, or QR.

Ready Status

• Active: The wallet is ready for use. Transactions can be performed, and other related features can be accessed.
• Active (Temporary): Similar to a regular active session, but a clock icon appears to indicate that a temporary session option has been selected (e.g., SeedQR or Temporary Signer). The user will need to enter the PIN to unlock the device again.

Setting up Blockstream Jade

• Press the Jade power button. Press and hold the power button. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Before use, charge the battery for approximately 4-5 hours.
• Select “Setup Jade”.
• Select “Begin Setup” (This guide is for beginners. We recommend choosing Begin Setup first. Advanced Setup will be covered in a future Jade article.)
• Select “Create New Wallet” to create a new Seed Phrase.

Saving Your Seed Phrase

• Write down your Seed Phrase offline. Do not take photos or store it online.
• If you choose "Begin Setup" - 12-word Seed Phrase.
• If you choose "Advanced Setup" - you can choose between a 12 or 24-word Seed Phrase.
• Write down the complete Seed Phrase as specified.
• Verify your Seed Phrase by selecting the correct words from your Seed Phrase before proceeding to the next step.
• Once the Seed Phrase is saved and verified, the device will prompt you to choose a connection method: USB, Bluetooth, or QR.
• The Seed Phrase will not be saved to Jade until the PIN setup is complete.

Connecting to the Application

• For beginners, it is recommended to choose Bluetooth if you want to connect to a smartphone.
• Download and install the Blockstream BTC Wallet (Green) Application on your smartphone.
• Open the Blockstream app and select “Connect Jade”.
• The application will start searching for your Jade via Bluetooth, using the method we selected above.

• Select your Jade on the Blockstream app when it appears and proceed to pair your device.
• Select Pair to connect Jade with your smartphone.
• Press Confirm on Jade Plus.

• Select your Jade on the Blockstream app when it appears and proceed to pair your device.
• Select Genuine Check to verify if it is an authentic Blockstream device.
• Jade Plus will prompt you to confirm the check. Press Yes.

• After that, the app will show that the check was successful. Press "Continue with Jade".
• The system will prompt you to set a PIN.
• Once you have set your PIN, it is ready to use.

How to Unlock Blockstream Jade

Normally, when our Blockstream Jade is inactive for a while, it automatically enters lock mode, similar to our smartphones. This can confuse many new users.

There are 3 ways to unlock:

• Unlock by connecting via USB cable (used when operating through a computer).
• Unlock by connecting via Bluetooth (used when operating with a smartphone). Simply connect to the application on your smartphone and enter the PIN to unlock.
• Unlock by scanning a QR Code (Air-gapped).

We recommend methods 1 and 2 as they are easier and more convenient.

Steps to Unlock with Air-gapped Method

• Navigate to the QR Mode menu.
• Press QR PIN Unlock.
• The device will display a QR Code. Use your smartphone to scan it and access the website for unlocking, then press Continue.

• Navigate to the QR Mode menu.
• Press QR PIN Unlock.
• The device will display a QR Code. Use your smartphone to scan it and access the website for unlocking, then press Continue.
• On your smartphone, you will be prompted to unlock with your PIN, and on Jade, enter your PIN.

• Jade will display a QR Code for you to scan.
• Use your smartphone to scan the QR Code, and once scanned, press the checkmark on Jade.

With these steps, your Jade is now set up and ready to send and receive Bitcoin.
