🍕 "Would you dare to pay 10,000 BTC for pizza?" ...A lesson in 'courage when no one understands'
Pizza... Dough, Cheese, and the Spirit of Bitcoin
In a world where people chase daily profits from Bitcoin's fluctuating price, there was one day when Bitcoiners stopped talking about prices and started talking about "pizza."
Yes — two pizzas bought with 10,000 BTC.
Or, valued today, over 1 billion US dollars, or about 33 billion Thai Baht.
But this is not a joke about someone who "missed out." This is a story about "courage."
The courage to believe in something the whole world didn't yet understand, and to use Bitcoin when almost no one valued it.
This story sounds like a crypto legend that people talk about every year, just to laugh or regret "how much it would be worth today if I had kept it." But if we look deeper, Pizza Day isn't just about eating pizza; it's a "mirror reflecting" the complexity of how humans perceive value, which often changes with time, emotion, and context.
🔹 The Beginning of History: "I want two pizzas."
May 22, 2010
A man named Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk.org forum:
“I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones.”
— Laszlo, Bitcointalk (2010)“I will pay 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas… like maybe two large ones.” — Laszlo, Bitcointalk (2010)
He didn't want to buy pizza with dollars.
He wanted to prove that Bitcoin could truly be money.
After waiting for four days, another member named "jercos" from the UK accepted the offer. He ordered two Papa John's pizzas for Laszlo over the phone and received 10,000 BTC in return. At that time, Bitcoin had no definite market trading price, but according to information on the Bitcointalk.org forum, 10,000 BTC was valued at approximately $41, or about 1,300 Thai Baht (based on an estimate in the Bitcointalk forum, as there was no official trading price then).
This means that 1 BTC was worth approximately $0.0041, or about 0.13 Thai Baht, which is very low compared to its current value.
This was the first transaction in history where Bitcoin was used to "buy real goods" in the real world.

💡 Value is dependent on "context" and "current needs."
Imagine holding a new, valueless token.
Then suddenly, someone lets you buy a cup of coffee with it — would you be happy?
The two pizzas at that time were proof for Laszlo that his idea worked, and they "fulfilled" what he needed then, while Bitcoin was still just a hypothetical concept that no one believed in.
Bitcoin's value then was a "dream."
But the value of the pizza was a "tangible reality."
And people often choose what meets their needs today over what might be valuable in the future.
🔹 So, how much is 10,000 BTC worth in 2025?
As of May 2025
The price of Bitcoin is approximately $100,000 per BTC.
🔥 10,000 BTC = 1,000,000,000 US Dollars
≈ 33,000,000,000 Thai Baht
From a cost of just 1,300 Baht in 2010, it became over 33 billion Baht in 2025, demonstrating the incredible growth in Bitcoin's value in just 15 years.
Just imagine… pizza worth thirty-three billion Baht.
Laszlo didn't "lose" those BTC; he "used" them to give meaning to something others still considered worthless, because Bitcoin would never become "money" if no one dared to exchange it for tangible goods.
🔸 And today… what would you exchange 10,000 BTC for?
- You could buy nearly 30 luxury seaside mansions in Monaco (each approximately 1.2 billion Baht).
-
Or you might buy over 50 private jets like the Gulfstream G700 (each approximately 600 million Baht).
- Or, if you want to be cool, you could buy about 9,400 Tesla Cybertrucks (each approximately 3.5 million Baht, depending on the model and accessories).
- Or… you could still order 94 million Papa John's pizzas (350 Baht per pizza) 🍕
🔹 Bitcoin Pizza Day is a triumph of "action" over "waiting."
Imagine the atmosphere on that day, won't you?
- No easy-to-use mobile digital wallets.
- No Lightning Network technology to transfer Bitcoin quickly in an instant.
- No big companies seriously interested in or accepting Bitcoin.
- No one could be sure whether Bitcoin would become a valuable and widely accepted asset.
But Laszlo did something incredible.
He didn't wait for "the world's acceptance."
He "affirmed" Bitcoin's value himself.
This is what transformed the narrative from "digital currency in theory" to "real usable money."
It was the turning point for Bitcoin, from concept to reality.
🔹 And today, what about us?
Today we have everything Laszlo didn't have back then.
- Easy-to-use and secure non-custodial digital wallets.
- The Lightning Network, which enables fast Bitcoin transfers with low fees.
- Merchants and services worldwide that are starting to accept Bitcoin as a payment method.
- New technologies like Taproot and Nostr, as well as a wealth of knowledge that Laszlo in 2010 might not have imagined.
But perhaps, what we still lack is "a heart" as brave as his.
💭 Are we "HODLing" (holding long-term) merely out of fear of misspending Bitcoin?
💭 Or are we still not truly confident that Bitcoin can be used in daily life?
😓 Humans fear loss more than they delight in gain (Loss Aversion).
The reason we regret the 10,000 BTC is not because we were in 2010.
But because we know the outcome now: that it would be valuable today.
We judge past decisions with present emotions.
When in reality, that was a "worthwhile payment" for that era.
This behavior is what economists call Loss Aversion — we feel much more pain from "losing" than joy from "gaining."
✨ Priceless Lessons from Two Pizzas
- True value is not just the price on the ticker: Bitcoin has proven that its value does not depend solely on fluctuating prices, but on people daring to make it "usable in practice."
- Don't overlook the pioneers: Laszlo was not foolish for spending Bitcoin thoughtlessly, but he was the one who opened the first door for us. Without that brave individual, the Bitcoin we know today might not exist.
- A little courage can change the world: An action that seemed small at the time has become a part of a great history. Today, all of us have the potential to be a "Laszlo" of our own era.
📣 Concluding Remarks
Bitcoin Pizza Day
Is not about pizza.
Is not about spending money at the wrong time.
But it is about belief transforming into action.
It is a lesson in "affirming" what you believe in… without waiting for the world's approval.
“Bitcoin will not become real money if no one dares to use it sincerely. And today, we all have the opportunity to carry on that intention.”
🍕 Final Question
If you had 10,000 BTC today...
Would you "keep it quietly"?
Or would you "use it" to change something in the real world?
🟠 Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day
Dare to use Bitcoin to forge your own path,
and be proud of what you believe in, even if the whole world doesn't understand yet!
