Storing Bitcoin on an exchange is convenient for trading, but it comes with risks because the private keys to your wallet are under the control of the exchange, not directly by the user. The principle crypto investors have always upheld is "Not your keys, not your coins."

A Hardware Wallet is an offline device for storing private keys, reducing the risk of digital assets from internet hacking, as every transaction must be confirmed directly on the device.

This article will explain the steps to transfer Bitcoin (BTC) from 4 exchanges: Binance, Binance TH, Bitkub, and InnovestX, to a OneKey Hardware Wallet, along with guidance for safe use.

Part 1 — Preparation Before Transfer

Before transferring Bitcoin, you should first prepare your OneKey Hardware Wallet.

Step 1.1 — Install OneKey App and Connect Device

  • Download the OneKey App from the official website onekey.so on the device you want to use.
  • Open the OneKey App and connect the Hardware Wallet device via USB cable or Bluetooth (depending on the model).
  • Unlock the device with your set PIN.

  • Tap Receive.
  • The OneKey App will display a Bitcoin Address and QR Code.
  • Verify the address on the Hardware Wallet device screen to ensure it matches what is displayed in the app.

The Receive screen displays the Bitcoin Address in alphanumeric form and a QR Code. Note that the Hardware Wallet device screen will show the same address to confirm accuracy. Do not copy the address only from your computer or phone screen; always verify it on your Hardware Wallet device.

⚠️ Precautions Before Every Transfer

  • Verify the address completely, especially the first 5 and last 5 characters.
  • Select the Network as Bitcoin (BTC) only. Do not select BEP20, ERC20, or any other network, as this will result in receiving WBTC instead of BTC. Read more about WBTC here.
  • Always test with a small amount for your first transfer.
  • Never share your Seed Phrase or Private Key with anyone or enter it on any website.

Part 3 — Tips and Precautions

Always verify the network.

Selecting the wrong network is one of the most common mistakes. Bitcoin must be transferred only via the Bitcoin Network. If transferred via BEP20 (Binance Smart Chain) or ERC20 (Ethereum), the coins will not be received and may be permanently lost.

Always try transferring a small amount first.

For the first transfer to a new address, send a small amount first, such as 0.0001 BTC, to verify that the coins are received correctly. Then, transfer the full amount in the next transaction.

Compare fees from each exchange.

Each exchange has different withdrawal fee policies. Always check before making a transaction. Generally, fees are clearly displayed on the confirmation page before sending.

Confirmation time on the Bitcoin Network

The Bitcoin Network takes approximately 10 minutes per block. Most exchanges require 1–3 confirmations before crediting the account. Therefore, it is advisable to wait approximately 10–30 minutes under normal conditions. If the network is highly congested, it may take 60 minutes or more.

Never disclose your Seed Phrase under any circumstances.

The Seed Phrase is the backup key for your Hardware Wallet. No exchange company or support team needs to know a user's Seed Phrase. If anyone asks for it, consider it a scam immediately.

Conclusion

Transferring Bitcoin from an exchange to a OneKey Hardware Wallet is a fundamental skill that crypto investors should master. The key principle to always remember is to verify the address and network before every confirmation, and to confirm the transaction on the Hardware Wallet device before sending.

Storing Bitcoin on a Hardware Wallet significantly reduces the risk of hacking or exchange-related issues, and is a recommended practice for those holding assets long-term.
