During this period of renewed excitement and promising trends in the cryptocurrency market, many investors may be looking for opportunities to generate returns. However, amidst this excitement, one thing that should not be overlooked is the security of digital assets, especially the management of the Seed Phrase, which is the key to accessing your coins. To prevent history from repeating itself, this article will recount lessons from the past, specifically a case study where investors lost a huge amount of money due to errors in managing their Seed Phrase.

Khun Ton's Experience

In 2021, Khun Ton, a Bitcoin investor who started investing in 2018, learned an expensive lesson after being tricked into entering his Seed Phrase, resulting in a loss of over 3 million baht. What Khun Ton did was store his Bitcoin in a Ledger Nano S, which is a secure Hardware Wallet. But the unexpected happened when he tried to access his coins after a long period of not checking them.

When Khun Ton connected his Ledger to his computer, the system prompted him to update the firmware. During the update, a fake pop-up (phishing) appeared on Khun Ton's computer screen, which was later suspected to contain malware. Without caution, Khun Ton entered his Recovery Seed into that fake pop-up without the slightest suspicion.

The next morning, Khun Ton was shocked to find that the chart in the Ledger Live application plummeted to zero, from a total value of over 3 million baht (at that time) to only a few hundred baht, which were small coins that the malicious actor did not bother to take.

Key Lessons from Khun Ton's Case

Khun Ton's case is a clear cautionary tale about the importance of managing your Seed Phrase correctly and securely. Here are the lessons you should remember:

  • The Importance of Recovery Seed: A Seed Phrase is the main key to access and recover your digital assets. If others know your Seed Phrase, they can access all your money.
  • Never Enter Your Seed Phrase Anywhere: The most important golden rule is: Never enter your Seed Phrase digitally, whether on websites, software, or any pop-ups. Ledger or other Hardware Wallets will never ask for your Seed Phrase on your computer or mobile phone screen.
  • Beware of Phishing and Malware: Phishing scams are widely used by malicious actors. Be cautious of suspicious emails, links, or pop-ups, and use reliable antivirus software.
  • Verify and Understand: Before performing any actions related to Hardware Wallets or digital assets, thoroughly research and understand the steps. If unsure, consult an expert or check information from reliable sources.
  • Diversify Risks: Investing all in one asset and storing it in one place can be highly risky. Diversifying investments and storing assets in multiple channels will help reduce damage if unexpected events occur.

Additional Recommendations for Maximum Security

To prevent yourself from falling victim to scams and losing digital assets, you should follow these recommendations:

  • Write down your Seed Phrase on paper: Write your Seed Phrase on paper (or a dedicated Seed Phrase storage device such as Trezor Keep Metal or Onekey KeyTag) at least in two sets. Store them in secure and different locations. Do not save them digitally (e.g., files on a computer, images on a mobile phone, or Cloud Storage).
  • Use strong passwords: Set complex passwords for all your accounts and devices, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Use 2FA for all supported accounts. Especially, using a Hardware Wallet as a U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) is more secure than using applications like Google Authenticator.
  • Verify the address before transferring: Before transferring cryptocurrencies, always carefully check the destination address, especially the first 5 and last 5 characters, to prevent address changes by malware.
  • Test transfers with small amounts: If unsure, try transferring a small amount first to confirm that the process is correct and the destination address is accurate.

Summary

Khun Ton's case study is a powerful reminder that awareness and prudence are the most important things in protecting digital assets. Your Seed Phrase is like the key to your treasure. Keeping it safe and not revealing it to others is what you should prioritize the most. I hope this article is useful and helps you invest in the cryptocurrency world more safely and confidently.
