Fast and efficient transactions are crucial, but sometimes you might find your transactions "Pending" or "Unconfirmed" for a long time. Whether it's Bitcoin or Ethereum, this problem can occur, especially during periods of high network congestion. If you encounter such a situation, don't panic. There are several methods we can use to resolve it.

What is an unconfirmed transaction?

Before we dive into solutions, let's first understand what an "unconfirmed transaction" is.

An unconfirmed transaction, also known as a "pending transaction," is a transaction that has been sent to the network (Bitcoin or Ethereum) but has not yet been fully confirmed and recorded on the blockchain.

There are several reasons why a transaction might not be confirmed immediately, such as:

  1. Fees too low: During periods of high network usage, transactions with lower-than-normal fees will be confirmed last on the blockchain, leading to longer wait times.
  1. Network congestion: When there are many transactions awaiting processing, it can cause delays in transaction confirmation.
  1. Technical issues: Sometimes, it can be due to problems with the Crypto Wallet or network connectivity.
  1. Incorrect settings: For example, setting a Gas Limit too low in Ethereum.

Unconfirmed transactions remain in a "Pending" status and do not yet result in the actual transfer of assets until they are confirmed and recorded on the Blockchain.

Resolving unconfirmed transactions is important because if left pending for too long, the transaction might be canceled by the system, or your funds could remain stuck in the mempool indefinitely.

Let's look at how to fix this problem for both Bitcoin and Ethereum.

How to fix unconfirmed transactions in Bitcoin

1. Wait a moment

Sometimes, patience is key. If the Bitcoin network is not too congested, your transaction should be confirmed within 10 to 60 minutes. You can check the status of your transaction using a reliable block explorer, such as blockchain.info.

2. Increase fees (RBF)

If waiting doesn't confirm the transaction, you can use the "Replace-By-Fee" (RBF) feature. This method is like "cutting in line" by paying an additional fee. Open your Bitcoin wallet, find the pending transaction, and look for the "Replace-By-Fee" or "Increase fee" option. Then set a new, higher fee (you can check recommended fees on mempool.space) and resubmit the transaction.

3. Use CPFP technique

Child-Pays-For-Parent (CPFP) is another excellent method. This technique is like sending a child to pay for dinner when the parent forgets their wallet. It means creating a new transaction using the unspent output from the original pending transaction, and setting a high enough fee to cover both the original and the new transaction. This helps both transactions get confirmed faster.

4. Use Accelerator Tools

Some Bitcoin wallets, such as Electrum or Blockchain.com, have special features to accelerate transactions. Check if your wallet has this feature. If so, you can use it to increase fees and resubmit the transaction. Alternatively, you can accelerate transactions through Bitcoin Accelerators like the ViaBTC Accelerator.

How to fix transactions on the Ethereum Blockchain

1. Send a new transaction with a higher Gas Price

In the world of the Ethereum Blockchain, "Gas Fee" is like the fuel cost for a transaction. If a transaction is pending, try creating a new transaction to the same address, using the same nonce but with a Gas Price at least 10% higher. This is like paying more for a faster ride.

2. Use an appropriate Gas Price

Gas Price can be simply compared to the price per liter of gasoline for a car. Some cars fill up with more expensive premium fuel and run faster than those with regular fuel. Similarly, setting an appropriate Gas Price helps prevent pending transaction issues.

Typically, most software wallets automatically set the Gas Price. However, if you wish to manually increase the Gas Price, you can do so. You can check recommended Gas Prices from websites like ETH Gas Station or Etherscan. This method helps ensure you don't overpay or risk your transaction getting stuck.

3. Increase the Gas Limit

The Gas Limit can be simply compared to filling your car's fuel tank sufficiently for a trip. If you run out of gas halfway or set the Gas Limit too low, your transaction might not succeed. For adjusting the Gas Limit, you can increase it by approximately 10-20% from the default value.

4. Use Accelerators Tools

Bitcast

Similar to Bitcoin, some Ethereum wallets (such as MetaMask) have transaction acceleration features. Try to find the pending transaction and see if there is a "Speed Up" or "Accelerate" option.

5. Cancel pending transactions

If all other methods fail, we might need to cancel the transaction. This can be done by sending a new transaction with 0 ETH to your own address, using the same nonce as the transaction you want to cancel, and setting a higher Gas Price than the original transaction. This method will "override" the original pending transaction.

No matter which method you choose, please exercise caution. Make sure you understand the potential outcomes before taking any action. If you feel unsure, consult the customer support of your crypto wallet.

Understanding how to resolve unconfirmed transactions will help Bitcoin and Ethereum users effectively manage potential issues, making transactions in the world of digital currency smoother and more satisfactory.
