If a hardware wallet breaks or is lost, are the coins in it lost?

Hardware wallets do not store coins. All coins are on the blockchain. A hardware wallet only stores the private keys to access the coins on the blockchain. Therefore, if it is lost or broken, your coins are not affected. You can restore your entire wallet using 12/24 words (seed phrase), which is a standard and can be used to recover funds on hardware wallets of different brands.
